남한산성을 쌓을 때 서남쪽 축성 책임자였던 이회 장군은 꼼꼼하게 성벽을 쌓다 보니 공사 경비도 부족하고 공사 기간도 늦어져 사재를 털어 공사 경비를 충당했다. 그런데 오히려 공사 경비를 주색에 탕진했다는 누명을 쓰고 참수를 당하게 되었다. 이때, 이회 장군은 “내 죄가 없다면 매 한 마리가 날아오를 것이다.”라는 유언을 남기고 참수당하였는데 실제로 장군이 죽자 그의 목에서 매 한 마리가 나와 근처 바위에서 슬피 울다가 날아갔다고 한다. 나중에 장군의 누명이 풀리고 난 후, 매가 앉았던 바위를 매바위 또는 장군바위라고 불렀다고 한다.

매바위에는 박종경이 쓴 수어서대 글씨와 낙관이 새겨져 있다. 낙관은 마모가 심하여 판독이 어려웠으나 최근 과학적으로 분석하여 총재원융(冢宰元戎)*, 박종경인(朴宗慶印)이라 추정하였다. 박종경은 조선 순조의 외숙부로 병조판서, 이조판서, 훈련대장 등을 두루 거쳤다.

Maebawi Rock and Sueoseodae* (Namhansanseong Fortress)

This boulder, located in a corner** of Sueojangdae Command Post’s enclosure, is called Maebawi, meaning “the Falcon’s Rock.” This name is connected to a story involving General Yi Hoe, who oversaw the construction of Namhansanseong Fortress’s southwestern wall. Yi was so meticulous about the wall construction that he ran out of funds and fell behind schedule, eventually deciding to cover the remaining costs from his own pocket. Despite his efforts, Yi was falsely accused of squandering the construction funds on alcohol and women and was sentenced to death. It is said that in his last words before beheading, Yi foretold that if he was innocent, a falcon would soar.” And indeed, right upon his death, a falcon appeared from his neck, cried sadly on this rock, and flew away.

The rock bears an inscription, reading Sueo seodae, which means “the Western Command Post” and refers to Sueojangdae Command Post. The inscription is accompanied by two*** carved seals, which are presumed to refer to the minister of personnel Bak Jong-gyeong. Bak was a maternal uncle of King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834) and served the posts of minister of personnel and military training commander.
