해설문

국문

이 아문(衙門)은 능성현(綾城縣) 당시 수령의 집무실인 동헌의 정문이다. 최초 건립연대는 알 수 없으나 정유재란 뒤인 선조(宣祖) 32년(1599)에 고쳐지었고, 선조(宣祖) 35년(1602) 당대 문필가였던 하동정씨(河東鄭氏) 정이(鄭怡, 1568-1625)가 객관인 능성관(綾城館)과 함께 죽수절제아문 (竹樹節制衙門) 현판을 썼다.

능주(綾州)는 죽수(竹樹)·연주(聯珠) 등으로도 불리웠으며 인헌왕후(仁獻王后) 구씨(具氏)의 관향(貫鄕)이라 하며 인조 (仁祖) 10년(1632) 능주목(綾州牧)으로 승격되었던 유서 깊은 고장이다.

건물은 정면 3칸 측면 2칸으로 단층 팔작지붕(옆에서 볼 때 '八' 모양)이다.

영문

Main Gate of the Magistrate's Office of the Neungju Local Government, Hwasun

This gate is the main gate of the magistrate's office which was the office of the magistrate* of the Neungju local government during the Joseon period (1392-1910). It is unknown when it was first built, but it was reconstructed in 1599 and has since undergone several repairs. Neungju-hyeon Government Office was located where the Administration and Welfare Center of Neungju-myeon Township currently stands, but the government buildings were all demolished and only this gate remains.

The building which measures three intervals in width and two intervals in depth, has a hip-and-gable roof. On the front there is a name plaque which means "Gate of Juksu Government Office" calligraphed in 1602 by the renowned calligrapher Jeong Yi (1568-1625). Juksu, meaning bamboo, was the other name of Neungju which comes from Neungju being a symbol of loyalty(?).

영문 해설 내용

이 문은 조선시대 능주현 수령의 집무실인 동헌의 정문이다. 최초 건립 연대는 알 수 없고, 1599년에 고쳐 지은 이후 여러 차례 수리하였다. 능주현의 관아는 지금의 능주면 행정복지센터가 있는 자리에 있었는데, 관아 건물은 모두 훼철되었고 유일하게 이 문만이 남아 있다.

건물은 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸으로 팔작지붕을 얹었다. 정면에는 “죽수 관아의 문”이라는 뜻의 현판이 걸려 있는데, 글씨는 명필 정이(1568-1625)가 1602년에 쓴 것이다. 죽수는 능주의 다른 이름으로 대나무를 뜻하며, 능주가 충절을 상징하는 곳이었기 때문에 붙은 이름이다.
