국문

F-51D 무스탕은 대한민국 공군이 도입한 최초의 전투기이다. 이 전투기는 출력이 강력하고 조정하기가 까다로워 야생마라는 애칭이 붙었다. 6·25 전쟁 때 미군으로부터 F-51D 무스탕 10대를 인수하여 출격을 개시한 이후 총 133대를 도입하여 수많은 전투에 출격했다.

F-51D 무스탕은 ‘신념(信念)의 조인(鳥人)’으로 잘 알려져 있다. 6·25 전쟁 당시 우리 공군의 조종 교관이었던 딘 헤스 중령이 자신의 전용 무스탕에 이 문구를 새겼다고 한다. 이는 그의 좌우명인 ‘신념으로 하늘을 난다(By faith, I fly)’를 번역한 것으로, 오늘날까지 공군 조종사의 상징이 되고 있다.

The Republic of Korea’s First Combat Plane (F-51D Mustang)

This plane is a F-51D Mustang, the first fighter aircraft put into service by the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). It earned the nickname “Mustang” because it was so powerful and hard to control. Beginning with 10 fighters obtained from the US Air Force at the start of the Korean War (1950-1953), the total number of ROKAF F-51Ds rose to 133. These planes were used in numerous battles during the war, and only two remain today: this one at the National Aviation Museum in Cheongju and the other at the National War Museum in Seoul.

In Korea, the F-51D Mustang was known by the nickname “Birdman of Faith.” The name came from the phrase “By faith, I fly” that was written on the aircraft of Lt. Col. Dean Elmer Hess (1917-2015), who served as a USAF instructor pilot training Korean pilots during the Korean War. The statement is still regarded as a motto symbolizing the service of the ROK pilots.
