해설문

국문

이 우물은 산골에서 솟아나는 샘물이다. 퇴계선생이 『역경(易經)』의 몽괘(蒙卦)에서 의미를 취해 직접 이름을 지었는데, 무지몽매한 제자를 바른길로 이끌어가는 스승의 도리를 뜻한다. 한 방울 샘물이 수많은 어려움 끝에 바다에 이르듯이, 제자들이 끊임없이 노력해서 뜻을 이루라는 의미를 담았다. 퇴계선생은 이 샘물을 도산서당의 터를 잡은 이유의 하나로 꼽았다. 이 지역 자연 배경이 학문을 수양하고 제자를 양성하는 데 적합하다고 여겼다.

영문

Mongcheon Spring

This spring was named by Yi Hwang after the hexagram "蒙 (mong)" from the Book of Changes (I Ching) that means "youthful folly" and "developing." This name indicates the morals of a teacher who should lead students to the way of enlightenment.

Yi Hwang once said that he had chosen the location for his study hall because of this spring. He believed that the surrounding natural environment was ideal for a school and for cultivating the Confucian spirit.
