소백산 주목* 군락은 우리나라의 대표적인 주목 군락지로서, 생물학적 보존 가치가 높아 천연기념물로 지정·보호되고 있다.

비로봉 정상부 서쪽의 능선을 따라 100여 그루씩 무리를 지어 2,000여 본이 자라고 있으며, 높은 바람받이(바람을 몹시 받는 곳)에 있기 때문에 나무의 키가 대부분 7m 내외이다. 줄기는 꼬여 있으며 가지는 높이 2m 정도에서 사방으로 뻗어 있는데, 곁가지가 아래위로 굴곡을 만든 모습이 신기하다.

• 주목은 주목과를 대표하는 상록 침엽수로, 가지와 줄기가 붉은빛을 띤다. 해발 1,000미터 이상인 고산 지대에서 자생하기 때문에 목질이 단단하고 썩지 않는 좋은 나무라고 알려져 있다. “살아서 천년, 죽어서 천년을 산다.”는 말이 있듯이, 조선시대에는 왕실의 가구와 임금의 관을 만들었을 만큼 희귀목이다.

Population of Spreading Yews in Sobaeksan Mountain

Spreading yews (Taxus cuspidata Siebold et Zucc.) are evergreen coniferous trees in the family Taxaceae. These trees grow in mountain range more than 1,000 m above sea level. The spreading yews are called “jumok” in Korean which means “scarlet tree” as the trunks and branches of the trees have bright reddish tone. These threes are popular for gardening. Also, they are used for high quality construction or furniture materials for its hard, glossy, and scented timber.

The population of spreading yews in Sobaeksan Mountain is the largest one in Korea. A total of more than 2,000 spreading yews are growing in groups of about 100 trees along the ridge of Birobong Peak to the west. The trees measure 7 m in height and 2 m in circumference at the chest level. Strong winds in high mountain deformed the shapes of the trees, which make branches twisted and grow horizontally in all direction.

주목은 주목과의 상록침엽교목으로 해발 1,000m 이상인 고산지대에서 자생한다. 가지와 줄기가 붉은빛을 띠기 때문에 ‘붉은 나무’라고 불린다. 나무의 모습이 아름다워 정원수로 많이 심고, 목질이 단단하고 광택과 향기가 있어 건축이나 가구 제작 등에도 쓰인다.
