국문

인제성당은 미국의 원조를 받아 1956년 세워졌다. 당시 홍천성당의 신부 간 토마스(Thomas Neligan)가 이곳 부지를 구입하였고, 또 다른 신부 오 후베르토(Hubert Hayward)가 건축 설계를 하였다고 한다. 이 두 사람은 인제성당뿐 아니라 강원도 지역 많은 성당과 인연이 깊다.

간 토마스는 홍천성당의 제5대 주임 신부로 사목하였다. 한국전쟁 중에는 선교사이자 미군의 군종 신부로 봉사하였다. 강릉성당에서 12대 주임 신부로 사목하던 중 과로로 운명하였다.

오 후베르토는 주로 간성, 고성 지역에서 사목하였다. 현재 강원도에 남아 있는 많은 성당 건축의 신축에 직간접적으로 관여하였다.
