인제성당은 미국의 원조를 받아 1956년 세워졌다. 당시 홍천성당의 신부 간 토마스(Thomas Neligan)가 이곳 부지를 구입하였고, 또 다른 신부 오 후베르토(Hubert Hayward)가 건축 설계를 하였다고 한다. 이 두 사람은 인제성당뿐 아니라 강원도 지역 많은 성당과 인연이 깊다.

간 토마스는 홍천성당의 제5대 주임 신부로 사목하였다. 한국전쟁 중에는 선교사이자 미군의 군종 신부로 봉사하였다. 강릉성당에서 12대 주임 신부로 사목하던 중 과로로 운명하였다.

오 후베르토는 주로 간성, 고성 지역에서 사목하였다. 현재 강원도에 남아 있는 많은 성당 건축의 신축에 직간접적으로 관여하였다.

The People Who Designed and Built Inje Catholic Church – Fr. Thomas Neligan and Fr. Hubert Hayward

Inje Catholic Church was built in 1956 with the support of the Catholic Welfare Association of America. Fr. Thomas Neligan (1932-1954) of the Hongcheon Catholic Church acquired the land and Fr. Hubert Hayward (1938-2006) laid plans for the construction. The two priests were deeply connected not only to Inje Catholic Church but many other churches in Gangwon-do Province.

- Fr. Thomas Neligan was the fifth parish priest of Hongcheon Catholic Church. He served not only as a foreign missionary but also a chaplain of the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1950-1953). He died from overworking while serving as the 12th parish priest of Gangneung.

- Fr. Hubert Hayward served mainly in the Ganseong and Goseong areas. He was involved, directly or indirectly, in the construction of numerous churches in Gangwon-do Province, many of which remain today.
