탱자나무는 우리나라 중부 이남에서 주로 자라며, 줄기에 가시가 있어 울타리에 많이 심었다. 이병기생가의 탱자나무는 높이가 5.2m를 넘고, 허리 높이의 굵기도 19㎝에 달하는 큰 나무다. 수령은 자세히 알 수 없으나 이병기 선생의 고조부가 충남 연산에서 이곳에 내려와 정착하면서 심은 것으로 보아 200년 정도로 추정한다. 지상 1.6m 높이에서 6개의 큰 가지로 나뉘어 무성하게 자라 아름답고 독특한 모양을 지니고 있다.

탱자나무(trifoliate orange, 학명 Poncirus trifoliata)는 운향과에 속하는 낙엽활엽관목이다. 한국에서는 중부 이남에서 주로자라고, 줄기와 가지에 날카로운 가시가 돋기 때문에 집의 울타리를 대신해 심기도 하였다. 5월에 꽃이 피고 9월에 열매를 맺는다.
이병기 생가에 있는 이 탱자나무는 울타리가 아닌 조경수로 심어진 독특한 경우이다. 나무의 나이는 약 200년 이상으로 추정된다. 높이는 5.2m를 넘고, 허리 높이의 둘레가 약 19cm로 일반적인 탱자나무에 비해 큰 편이다. 하나의 줄기에서 시작해 1.6m 높이에서 6개의 큰 가지로 나뉜 아름답고 독특한 모양을 이루었다.
