영월 용담굴은 석회암으로 이루어진 수직 동굴로, 총길이는 250m이다. 용이 도사리고 있었다는 전설이 전해진다. 동굴은 네 부분의 넓은 공간으로 나뉘어 있는데 그중 두 곳은 둘레가 100m나 되어 분화구같은 느낌을 준다. 또한 주위는 고드름처럼 생긴 종유석과 바닥에서 돌출되어 올라온 석순, 종유석과 석순이 만나 기둥을 이룬 석주 등이 병풍처럼 둘러싸여 있다. 다른 한 곳에는 1.5m 내외의 석순들이 줄지어 선 선녀들처럼 보인다고 하여 선녀탕이라고 부르는 깊이 50㎝, 넓이 15평의 물웅덩이가 있으며, 웅덩이의 바닥에는 아름다운 동굴 진주가 깔려있다. 동굴 내부의 온도는 15∼18℃를 유지하고 있으며, 소라, 게새우 등 20여 종의 동굴 생물이 살고 있다.
