해설문

국문

이 아문(衙門)은 능성현(綾城縣) 당시 수령의 집무실인 동헌의 정문이다. 최초 건립연대는 알 수 없으나 정유재란 뒤인 선조(宣祖) 32년(1599)에 고쳐지었고, 선조(宣祖) 35년(1602) 당대 문필가였던 하동정씨(河東鄭氏) 정이(鄭怡, 1568-1625)가 객관인 능성관(綾城館)과 함께 죽수절제아문 (竹樹節制衙門) 현판을 썼다.

능주(綾州)는 죽수(竹樹)·연주(聯珠) 등으로도 불리웠으며 인헌왕후(仁獻王后) 구씨(具氏)의 관향(貫鄕)이라 하며 인조 (仁祖) 10년(1632) 능주목(綾州牧)으로 승격되었던 유서 깊은 고장이다.

건물은 정면 3칸 측면 2칸으로 단층 팔작지붕(옆에서 볼 때 '八' 모양)이다.

Main Gate of the Magistrate’s Office of the Neungju Local Government

This gate served as the main gate of the magistrate’s office of the Neungju Local Government during the Joseon period (1392-1910). It is unknown when the gate was first built, but it was reconstructed in 1599 and has since undergone several repairs. It is all that remains of the local government complex, which stood where the Neungju-myeon Administration and Welfare Center currently stands.

The gate has a hip-and-gable roof and measures three bays in width by two bays in depth. It features a name plaque calligraphed in 1602 by the renowned calligrapher Jeong Yi (1568-1625) that reads Juksujeoljeamun, meaning “Gate of the Juksu Government Office.” The name Juksu, meaning bamboo, is another name for the Neungju area that emphasizes the area’s symbolism as a place of loyalty.

영문 해설 내용

이 문은 조선시대 능주현 수령의 집무실인 동헌의 정문이다. 최초 건립 연대는 알 수 없고, 1599년에 고쳐 지은 이후 여러 차례 수리하였다. 능주현의 관아는 지금의 능주면 행정복지센터가 있는 자리에 있었는데, 관아 건물 중 이 문만이 유일하게 남아있다.

건물은 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸으로 팔작지붕을 얹었다. 정면에는 “죽수 관아의 문”이라는 뜻의 현판이 걸려 있는데, 글씨는 명필 정이(1568-1625)가 1602년에 쓴 것이다. 죽수는 능주의 다른 이름으로 대나무를 뜻하며, 능주가 충절을 상징하는 곳이었기 때문에 붙은 이름이다.
