화천 용암리 선사유적은 화천군에서 2002년 생활체육공원 조성 사업과 2011년 도로 확장사업을 시행하기에 앞서 땅속의 문화재 분포 상황을 파악하기 위한 발굴조사 과정에서 확인되었다.
이 유적은 위라리와 용암리 일대를 휘돌아 흐르는 북한강 상류의 충적 대지에 형성되었으며, 세 차례의 유적 발굴조사를 통해 오랜 기간 만들어진 청동기시대 마을 유적으로 밝혀졌다. 또한 신석기시대 불 땐 자리, 청동기시대 집터와 건물 터, 무덤 등의 흔적과 사람들이 사용하던 다양한 생활 도구가 나왔다.
청동기시대 이른 시기부터 늦은 시기(기원전 12세기~기원전 5세기)까지 형성된 용암리 선사유적은 인근의 거례리 유적과 함께 북한강 상류 지역의 선사시대 생활 문화 양상을 연구하는 데 귀중한 자료이다.

Prehistoric Site in Yongam-ri, Hwacheon
This prehistoric site in Yongam-ri, Hwacheon, is home to a prehistoric settlement formed over the 12th-5th centuries BCE during the Bronze Age. It is situated on an alluvial plain in the upstream region of the Bukhangang River. Archaeological remains discovered here include a hearth site, dwelling sites, other building sites, tombs, and various tools. These remains were unearthed during a series of three excavations conducted after the site was first discovered in 2002 during a survey of the area conducted prior to the construction of Hwacheon Sports Park.
Along with the nearby Archaeological Site in Georye-ri, this site provides valuable information on the life and culture of the people living in the Bukhangang River’s upstream basin during the prehistoric period.

화천 용암리 선사유적은 기원전 12세기부터 기원전 5세기에 걸쳐 형성된 청동기 집단 취락 유적으로, 북한강 상류의 충적 대지에 형성되었다. 이곳에서는 불 땐 자리, 집자리와 건물지, 무덤 등의 흔적과 다양한 생활 도구가 발견되었다. 이러한 유구들은 2002년 화천군 생활체육공원 조성을 위해 실시된 조사에서 최초로 발견된 이후 세 차례의 발굴 조사가 이루어졌다.
