홍촌마애승상은 북동향의 바위에 스님 얼굴을 조각한 상이다. 5구의 스님 얼굴은 바위 위쪽에 3구, 아래쪽에 2구가 배치되어 있는데 정면상과 측면상으로 구분된다. 가느다란 눈, 오똑한 코, 반쯤 벌려 웃고 있는 입과 귀가 공통적으로 조각되어 있다.

우리나라의 마애상은 부처님을 새기는 것이 보편적인 경향임에 비해 스님의 얼굴을 소재로 한 것이 특이하다.

홍촌마애승상은 고려시대에 만들어진 것으로 추정되며, 주변의 마애명문과 흔적들로 보아 최근까지 이곳에서 불공을 드렸던 것으로 보인다.

영문

Rock-carved Buddhist Monks in Hongchon

This rock carving depicts five Buddhist monks and is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period (918-1392). It is an unusual carving as it depicts monks instead of buddhas or bodhisattvas, which are the predominant subjects of Korean Buddhist rock carvings.

There are three monks in the upper row and two monks in the lower row. They are portrayed with slanted eyes, prominent noses, and broad smiles. Two of the monks are depicted in profile.

There are other rock carvings in the vicinity, including depictions of Buddhist monks, lotus designs, and inscriptions, suggesting that people visited this area to pray.

영문 해설 내용

이 마애상은 다섯 승려의 모습을 조각한 것으로, 고려시대에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 한국의 마애상은 부처나 보살의 모습을 새기는 것이 보편적인데, 이 마애상은 승려를 새긴 것이 특이하다.

바위 위쪽에 3명, 아래쪽에 2명이 배치되어 있다. 가느다란 눈, 오똑한 코, 활짝 웃고 있는 모습으로 표현되어 있으며, 2명은 옆모습으로 새겼다.

인근의 다른 바위들에도 승려의 모습이나 연화문양, 또는 명문이 새겨져 있다. 사람들이 이곳을 찾아와 불공을 드렸던 것으로 보인다.
