국문
해남 연당리 미륵불은 고려 중기 석조보살입상으로, 현재는 미륵불로 불리며 마을의 수호신처럼 신앙되고 있다. 불상은 머리와 광배 일부가 파손되었으며, 시멘트 보수로 현재 상반신만 드러난 상태이다. 한 돌에 조각된 불상과 광배는 단순한 표현이며, 옷차림과 착용 장식으로 보아 보살상으로 추정된다.
연당리 일대에서 출토된 고려 후기~조선 전기 유물과 함께, 이 불상은 고려 중기 불교 조각 양식을 계승한 예로 평가된다. 마을에서는 매년 정월대보름과 사월 초파일에 제사를 지내며, 신앙의 중심이 되어 왔다.
이 불상에는 전라우수사의 아들 소원과 관련된 전설이 전해지며, 당시의 민속신앙과 불교적 요소가 결합된 독특한 신앙 형태를 보여준다. 현재는 용화당 보호각 내에 봉안되어 있으며, 마을 사람들의 신앙 대상이자 지역 문화유산으로 중요한 가치를 지닌다.

Maitreya Buddha in Yeondang-ri, Hwangsan-myeon
This stone statue in Yeondang-ri Village is believed to depict Maitreya, the Future Buddha, and is presumed to have been made in the middle period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). The image of the Buddha and the halo were carved from a single piece of stone in a generally simple manner. Parts of the halo and head are damaged, while the legs have been repaired with cement.
The locals, who have long worshiped this statue as their village guardian, hold veneration rituals for the statue on the first full moon of the lunar year and on the Buddha’s birthday. There is also a local legend related to the statue that dates back to the Joseon period (1392-1910). The legend states that there was once an official with no male heir who dreamt of a Buddhist monk who told him to go to the Navy Headquarters of West Jeolla-do Province and create an image of Maitreya Buddha. After being appointed Navy Commander of West Jeolla-do Province, he gathered money from the villagers to make the Maitreya Buddha, after which he finally had a son. However, when his young son died of disease, he sent a crew to destroy the Maitreya Buddha. Right as they were about to begin, a bolt of lightning appeared out of the blue, killing them all. Since then, the Maitreya Buddha is said to have been untouchable.
영문 해설 내용
연당리에 있는 이 불상은 미륵불로 여겨지며, 고려 중기에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 미륵불의 몸과 광배는 하나의 돌로 만들어졌고, 전체적으로 표현이 단순하다. 광배 일부와 머리 윗부분이 파손되었고, 다리 부분은 시멘트로 보수되었다.
오랫동안 이 불상을 마을의 수호신으로 신봉해온 마을 사람들은 매년 정월대보름과 부처님 오신 날인 사월초파일에 제사를 지낸다. 이 불상에는 조선시대로 거슬러 올라가는 전설도 전해진다. 한 남자가 아들이 없어서 근심하였는데, 꿈에서 한 승려를 만나 전라우수영으로 가서 미륵불을 조성하라는 말을 들었다. 이 남자는 전라우수사로 부임한 뒤 마을 주민들에게 돈을 거둬 미륵불을 조성하였고, 마침내 아들을 얻었다. 그러나 어린 아들은 병에 걸려 죽고 말았고, 화가 난 남자는 미륵불을 산산조각 내려 하였다. 하지만 갑자기 천둥 번개가 치며 날벼락이 일어 미륵불을 부수려던 인부들이 목숨을 잃었고, 이후 미륵불을 건드리지 못하였다고 한다.
