훈맹정음(訓盲正音)은 송암 박두성(松庵朴斗星, 1888~1963)이 1926년에 반포한 6점식 한글점자로, 본 문화재는 일지, 제판기 등 제작 및 보급 유물 총 8건 48점으로 구성되어 있다.

강화군 교동면 출신의 박두성은 1913년 제생원 맹아부*에 부임하면서 시각장애인 교육에 매진하기 시작했다. 우리말로 된 점자가 없음을 안타깝게 여긴 그는 1920년 비밀리에 조선어점자연구위원회를 조직하여 연구를 거듭한 끝에 1926년 11월 4일 한글점자 훈맹정음을 발표했다. 1927년 7월에는 조선맹인사업협회를 조직하여 점자책 제작 및 보급에도 힘썼다.

세종대왕의 훈민정음(訓民正音)처럼 일제강점기 시각장애인을 위해 창안된 한글점자 훈맹정음과 그 제작 및 보급 유물은 당시 사회・문화적 상황을 반영하고 있다는 점에서 역사적 가치가 크다.

Artifacts Related to the Production and Dissemination of Hunmaengjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the Blind)

Hunmaengjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the Blind) is a 6-dot tactile writing system for the Korean language created in 1926 by Bak Du-seong (1888-1963). As the first-ever Korean braille system, its design is closely based on the Korean script Hangeul. Its name is an homage to Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People), the document that first described the Korean script in 1446.

Bak Du-seong devoted his life to educating and improving the livelihoods of the visually impaired. In 1913, at the start of the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), he received a position at the Department of Visually Impaired Children at Jesaengwon School, an institution founded by colonial authorities to provide public education for children with impaired sight and hearing. The frustrating reality of Korean children being taught Japanese braille with no way to read in their native language motivated Bak to secretly assemble the Korean Braille Research Committee in 1920. After years of research, Hunmaengjeongeum was published on November 4, 1926. In July 1927, Bak established the Commercial Association of Visually Impaired Koreans to produce and distribute literature printed in this writing system.

This collection of 48 artifacts was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage in 2020. It includes a record containing an overview of the writing system’s principles and manual, a logbook describing its creation process, and various objects used to print books in the writing system. The artifacts in this collection hold significant value as they demonstrate important aspects of the social and cultural situation in colonial Korea.

영문 해설 내용

훈맹정음은 박두성(1888-1963)이 일제강점기인 1926년에 창안한 최초의 6점식 한글점자이다. 훈맹정음이라는 이름은 1446년에 간행된 한글 설명서인 훈민정음에서 비롯되었다.

박두성은 평생을 시각장애인 교육에 매진하였다. 일제강점기인 1913년 박두성은 시각·청각 장애인의 교육을 담당하던 제생원 맹아부에 부임하였다. 당시 그는 일본어로 된 점자는 있어도 한국어를 제대로 기록할 수 있는 한글 점자가 없는 것을 안타깝게 생각하였고, 1920년 비밀리에 조선어점자연구위원회를 조직하였다. 몇 년간 연구를 거듭하다 1926년 11월 4일 훈맹정음을 발표하였고, 1927년 7월에는 조선맹인사업협회를 조직하여 점자책 제작 및 보급에도 힘썼다.

총 48점의 유물이 2020년 국가등록문화재로 등록되었다. 등록된 유물에는 훈맹정음의 원리와 사용법에 대한 기록, 창안 과정을 기록한 일지, 점자책 제작에 사용한 물품 등이 있다. 훈맹정음과 그 제작 및 보급 유물은 당시 사회・문화적 상황을 반영하고 있다는 점에서 역사적 가치가 크다.
