Choe Jun’s House, Gyeongju

This house was built in 1799 when Choe Eon-gyeong (1743-1804) of the Gyeongju Choe Clan moved to this neighborhood. It was also the home of the businessman and philanthropist Choe Jun (1884-1970).

In Korean, this house is known as the “House of the Wealthy Choe Family.” The Choe family was widely known for their generosity. It is said that they kept one-third of their income for themselves, gave one-third to passersby and guests, and gave one-third to those in need. This family spirit was carried on by Choe Jun, who, during the course of his life, gave his entire fortune away to meaningful causes such as independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945) and public education.

The house consists of a gate quarters, a men’s quarters, a women’s quarters, a shrine, and a storehouse. The men’s quarters and women’s quarters, together with two auxiliary quarters, form an overall square layout with a courtyard in the middle. The shrine is located behind the women’s quarters to the left. It is said that relatively short pillars used to construct this house to respect the sanctity of Gyeongjuhyanggyo Local Confucian School, which neighbors the house to the right.
