해설문

국문

모밀잣밤나무는 참나무과의 늘 푸르고 잎이 넓은 큰키나무로, 주로 난대림 지역에서 자란다. 자웅동주*이며, 꽃은 6월에 황금빛으로 피고 향기가 강하다. 열매는 다음 해 10월에 익고 식용할 수 있다.

모밀잣밤나무가 100여 그루 이상 자라고 있는 이 숲은 모밀잣밤나무의 순림*에 가까우나, 숲 속에는 사스레피나무, 보리밥나무, 팔손이, 생달나무, 송악, 모람, 자금우, 마삭줄 등의 늘푸른나무와 굴참나무, 개서어나무, 벚나무 등의 갈잎큰키나무가 섞여 있다.

욕지도 모밀잣밤나무 숲은 물고기를 보호하고 숲 가까이로 유인하는 어부림(魚付林)으로서의 역할을 하고 있으며, 우리나라의 대표적인 늘푸른나무 숲 중의 하나이므로 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.

영문

Forest of Cyathea Cuspidata on Yokjido Island, Tongyeong

Japanese chinquapin (Castanopsis cuspidata (Thunb.) Schottky) is a large broadleaf evergreen tree in the beech family (Fagaceae). On the Korean Peninsula, it mainly grows along the southern coastal region. The tree’s flowers bloom in June and consist of fragrant, golden female and male flowers. The tree’s fruits ripen in October next year and consist of an edible nut that resembles a pointed acorn.

The forest on Yokjido Island consists of about 100 specimens of Cyathea Cuspidata. It shares the habitat with other evergreen plants, such as yellow East Asian eurya, broad-leaf oleaster, formosa rice tree, Japanese cinnamon, Songak ivy, Oriental vining fig, marlberry, and hairy star jasmine, as well as large deciduous trees, such as Oriental cork oak, Asian hornbeam, and Oriental flowering cherry.

Located along the seaside, the forest attracts fish, which seek shelter in its vicinity. The locals have also revered this forest as a guardian spirit, believing that it has the divinity to protect the village. As one of Korea’s representative evergreen forests, this forest was designated as a Natural Monument in 1984.

영문 해설 내용

모밀잣밤나무는 참나무과의 늘 푸르고 잎이 넓은 큰키나무다. 한국에서는 주로 남해안 일대에 많이 자란다. 6월에 황금빛의 암꽃과 수꽃이 한 나무에 같이 피며 향기가 강하다. 열매는 먹을 수 있고, 다음해 10월에 익는다.

욕지도의 이 숲에는 100그루가 넘는 모밀잣밤나무가 자라고 있다. 이외에도 사스레피나무, 보리밥나무, 팔손이, 생달나무, 송악, 모람, 자금우, 마삭줄 등의 늘푸른나무와 굴참나무, 개서어나무, 벚나무 등의 갈잎큰키나무가 섞여 있다.

바닷가에 위치한 이 숲은 물고기들을 유인하여 보호하는 어부림의 역할을 하며, 마을을 지키는 당숲으로도 여겨져 오랫동안 마을 주민들의 보호를 받아왔다. 한국의 대표적인 늘푸른나무 숲 중 하나로 1984년 천연기념물로 지정되었다.
