해설문
국문
태백산 석장승은 1987년에 현재의 위치로 이전하여 복원할 때 자연석을 장승의 받침돌로 깔고, 그 윗면에 각각 ‘천장(天將)‘과 ‘지장(地將)‘이라 새겨 ‘천하대장군’ 과 ‘지하여장군’임을 표시했다. 다만 생김새가 온화하고 점잖은 모습이어서 장승보다는 문인석이나 미륵상에 더 가까운 것으로 추정된다.
길 왼쪽에 있는 천장은 높이 170cm, 둘레 130cm이고, 반대편에 있는 지장은 높이 155cm, 둘레 135cm의 크기로 보존 상태는 전반적으로 양호한 편이다.
두 장승의 제작 시기는 알 수 없으나, 하늘을 섬기는 천제 신앙과 천신에게 제를 올리는 장소인 태백산 천제단과 관련하여 태백산신의 수호신상으로서의 구실을 했고, 지장의 경우에는 코가 많이 닳아 있는 것으로 보아 마을의 수호신 역할을 하기도 했음을 알 수 있다.
영문
These stone posts represent male and female guardians. It is not known when these two stone guardian posts were first erected. They were originally located 1.2 km to the north of the current site and were moved to a nearby temple, before being moved again to their present location in 1987.
Taebaeksan Mountain has long been regarded as a sacred place, as it is the location of Cheonjedan Altar for holding heaven-worshipping rituals. In this sense, these guardian posts are assumed to have been respected as guardians of the heaven-worshipping religion. Also, the worn-out nose of the female guardian post suggests that it was also a guardian deity of a local village.
The male guardian post on the left is 1.7 m in height and 1.3 m in circumference, while the female guardian post is 1.55 m in height and 1.35 m in circumference. Both of them have been preserved in good condition with gentle and fine appearances.
