태백경찰서 망루는 한국 전쟁 당시 북한군의 침투에 대비하여 세워진 것으로 추정하고 있다. 망루는 주변 동정을 살피고 비상시에 망대와 초소 역할을 하는 시설물이다. 대한민국의 근대화 과정의 혼란스러움을 엿볼 수 있는 유적이다.

이 망루에는 무장 경찰관이 근무하면서 비상시에 종을 울려 위험을 알렸다. 원형의 망루 각 층에는 밖을 내다볼 수 있는 창이 높이가 다르게 사방으로 나 있어 위급 상황 시 무장 저항에 대비하여 설계한 것으로 추정된다.

Watchtower of Taebaek Police Station

This round watchtower is presumed to have been built during the Korean War (1950-1953) to prepare for the North Korean army’s invasion into this town. Armed police officers were stationed in this watchtower to alert people in case of an emergency by ringing a bell. The tower has two stories inside. On the ceiling of the ground level, there is a rectangular hole through which people can move to the upper level by using a ladder. Both the upper and lower levels have openings on the wall at different heights in all directions to watch the outside.

영문 해설 내용

이 원형 망루는 한국전쟁 당시 북한군의 침투에 대비하여 세워진 것으로 추정된다. 무장 경찰관이 이곳에서 근무하면서 비상시에는 종을 울려 위험을 알렸다.

내부는 2층으로 되어있으며, 아래층 천장에 네모난 구멍을 내어 사다리를 놓고 오르내렸다. 각 층에는 밖을 내다볼 수 있는 창이 높이가 다르게 사방으로 나 있다.
