Stele of Remembrance for Gu Jong-myeong
This stele was erected in July 1906 by local residents to commemorate the public service of Gu Jong-myeong, who was serving at Mokpo’s first police station at the time. The stele measures 160 cm in height and 40 cm in width.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when Japanese pressure on Korea was intensifying, Gu Jong-myeong took the lead in protecting the rights of Koreans who often suffered due to their lack of legal knowledge. However, during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), he later served as county magistrate in Yeonghae (present-day Yeongdeok) and Hyeonpung (present-day Dalseong), which led to his inclusion in the Dictionary of Pro-Japanese Collaborators.
This stele embodies the dual legacy of a man remembered both as a righteous figure devoted to the people of Mokpo and as a collaborator who served the colonial regime, reflecting the light and shadow of Korea’s modern history. It also offers insight into the social circumstances of Mokpo during the port-opening period, when labor disputes and conflicts between Korea and Japan were frequent.
