해설문

국문

청화사는 도심 속의 산속에 자리 잡은 작은 사찰로 1940년에 창건되었다. 2002년 화재로 법당이 불타 없어지면서 불상만 인근 봉사자들에 의해 관리되고 있다. 이 석조 비로자나불좌상은 불신(佛身)과 광배(光背), 대좌(臺座)가 하나의 돌로 조성되어 있다. 머리에 쓰고 있는 삼면보관이 매우 특이하며 얼굴은 긴 편이다. 목에는 가늘게 조각된 삼도(三道)가 뚜렷하고, 법의는 통견으로 옷주름은 좌우대칭을 이루었다. 손모양은 지권인(智拳印)이며 결가부좌(結跏趺坐)를 하고 있는 것으로 보이나 무릎 부분이 파손되어 보이지 않는다. 광배는 거신광배(擧身光背)로서 바깥에는 화염문(火焰紋)이 나타나 있다.

Stone Seated Vairocana Buddha in Mochung-dong, Cheongju

This is a stone statue of Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha. It is uncertain when it was created. The body, halo, and pedestal of this statue were carved from a single stone. The halo, which features flame patterns, emanates from the entire body. The posture appears to be full lotus position, but it is not entirely clear due to damage at the knee. The statue was housed in Cheonghwasa Temple, a small temple opened in 1940 on a mountain in the city center. In 2002, a fire destroyed the temple, leaving only this statue, which is currently being protected by local volunteers.
