해설문

국문

이 불상은 일명 장군바위라고도 불리는 자연 암반에 돋을새김으로 새겨져 있다. 받침대(臺座) 위에 양발을 교차하여 좌선하는 모습(結跏趺坐)을 취하고 있다. 머리 쪽(頭光)과 몸체(身光)에 따라 광배(光背)를 갖추고 있으나 장식은 없다. 머리에는 소라고동처럼 들어 올린 상투(肉髻)가 남아 있고, 얼굴은 오른쪽이 심하게 훼손되어 전체 모습을 알기 어려우나 남아있는 왼쪽 얼굴로 짐작하건대 풍만하고 여유가 있다. 손 모양은 부처가 악마를 누르고 깨달음을 이루는 순간을 형상화한 항마촉지인(降魔觸地印)으로, 이 손 모양은 경주 석굴암의 본존불과 같은 형태의 가부좌(跏趺坐)를 튼 불상에서만 볼 수 있다. 어깨는 자연스럽게 굴곡을 이루고 있고, U자 모양이 세 겹으로 겹쳐서 흘러내린 옷자락(法衣)이 마모가 심한 상태로 받침대까지 펼쳐져 있다. 파도 문양을 새긴 받침대는 8각형의 형태를 띠고, 가운데 받침대는 3개의 기둥을 표현함으로써 입체감을 더해 주고 있다. 전체적으로 통일신라시대의 불상의 특징을 잘 나타내고 있다.

Rock-carved Seated Buddha in Samjeongja-dong, Changwon

This stone Buddha is a relief carving on the face of a natural rock called “General’s Rock.” This Buddha sits in a meditative cross-legged position on top of a pedestal. There are two halos, one surrounding the head and one the body, both without ornamentation. The statue has a large protuberance on the top of the head, which symbolizes the Buddha’s wisdom. The face is severely damaged, the expression cannot be known. The right hand of the Buddha reaches down toward the ground, while the left hand rests on his knee, indicating the attainment of spiritual enlightenment. The shoulder line takes on a natural thickness from the triple-layered clothing. The octagonal pedestal is draped with fabric that hangs in a U-shape, below which are three columns that give the carving a sense of solidity. The overall form and style of the carving are characteristic of Buddha figures from the Unified Silla period (668-935).
