해설문
국문
창녕 청련사 영산회후불탱은 대웅전에 봉안된 후불화이다. 석가여래도로 화면의 크기가 세로 253cm, 가로 232cm이며 비단 바탕에 영취산에서 법화경을 설법하는 석가모니의 모습을 군집구도로 그렸다. 이 불화는 화면 중앙에 석가모니불과 좌우 협시*로 문수보살, 보현보살을 크게 그렸으며, 화면 상단에는 제석천과 범천 및 십대제자를, 화면 하단에는 사천왕을 일렬로 배치하였다. 불화의 최하단 좌우측에는 그림에 대한 기록인 화기(畵記)가 적혀 있다.
창녕 청련사 영산회후불탱은 군집 구도와 좌우대칭을 이루는 전형적인 조선 후기 불화의 전통을 따르고 있다. 그림에 기록된 화기를 통해 철종 14년(1863)에 제작된 것을 알 수 있으며 봉안처, 제작에 관여한 사람, 시주자 등에 대해서도 기록되어 있어 그림에 대한 역사를 명확히 알 수 있다. 조선 후기 영산회상도의 변화 양상을 잘 보여주는 작품으로 문화재적 가치가 있는 작품이다.

Hanging Scroll Behind the Buddha of Cheongnyeonsa Temple, Changnyeong (The Vulture Peak Assembly)
This painting hanging behind the main altar in Daeungjeon Hall of Cheongnyeonsa Temple depicts the scene of Buddha’s lecture at Vulture Peak. The painting was made in 1863 and measures 2.53 m in height and 2.32 m in width.
The painting features Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha, seated on a lotus pedestal in the center. He is flanked by Manjusri (Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Insight) and Samantabhadra (Bodhisattva of Great Conduct), forming a triad. The figures depicted above this triad include the Buddha’s ten principal disciples and the deities Indra and Brahma. Depicted below the triad are the Four Guardian Kings. The painting demonstrates a typical composition for the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), consisting of several principal figures in the center with their retinue distributed around them in a left-right symmetry. At the bottom of the painting is an inscription recording the year of its completion, the place of its enshrinement, a list of the artisans who helped make the painting, and a list of the painting’s patrons.

청련사 대웅전 중앙 불단 뒤에 걸려있는 이 불화는 석가모니가 영취산에서 설법하는 장면을 묘사하고 있다. 1863년에 그려졌으며, 가로 232cm, 세로 253cm이다.
