진해 일광세탁은 중원광장과 제황산 사이에 위치한 2층 건물로, 모두 세 개의 건물로 이루어져 있다. 철근 콘크리트조의 2층 건물은 도로를 향해 있으며, 뒤쪽 마당에는 창고와 살림집이 있다. 건축 면적은 248.07㎡이며, 철근 콘크리트·목재·시멘트 블록 등 다양한 건축 재료가 혼합된 건축 특징을 가진다.

일광세탁은 ‘진해 근대역사문화공간’에 포함된 10개의 국가등록 문화유산 중 유일한 철근 콘크리트조 건물이다. 수평 띠를 돌려 수평성을 강조하면서 타일과 돌로 치장한 외관이 독특함을 자아낸다. 다각 구조의 필지 형태에 맞추어 건물을 배치하였고 세탁 작업 광경을 직접 볼 수 있도록 도로 쪽으로 유리창을 내었다.

1940년대에 세탁소로 문을 연 이곳은 3대가 대를 이어 영업을 하였으며, 진해에 거주하는 해군 장교들은 물론 진해를 방문한 역대 대통령들도 단골로 이용했을 만큼 유명세를 자랑했다. 특히 2층 공간은 시대에 따라 정당 사무실, 교회, 해군전우회 사무실 등 다양한 용도로 활용되어 각 시기의 사회적, 문화적 변화를 고스란히 담고 있다.

건축적 특징을 포함하여 해군 도시의 역사, 문화와 함께한 일광세탁은 진해의 근현대사에서 빠질 수 없는 중요한 장소 중 하나로 평가된다.

영문

Ilgwang Laundry

Ilgwang Laundry consists of a two-story reinforced concrete building, behind which stand a storehouse and a private residence. Measuring 248.07 ㎡ in total surface area, the complex exhibits distinctive architectural features through its mixture of building materials, including reinforced concrete, wood, and cement blocks.

This building is the only reinforced concrete structure among the ten National Registered Cultural Heritage sites in the Jinhae Modern History and Culture District. Decorated with tiles and stone, its unique exterior features horizontal bands emphasizing horizontality. The building was arranged to fit the polygonal lot shape, with large glass windows facing the street to allow passersby to view the laundry operations inside.

Opening as a laundry in the 1940s, the business has been operated by three generations of the same family and gained fame as a regular destination not only for naval officers residing in Jinhae but also for successive presidents visiting the city. Notably, the second floor has been adapted for various purposes over time, including a political party office, a church, and a Navy Veterans’ Club, reflecting the social and cultural changes of each era.

With its architectural characteristics and connection to the history and culture of this naval city, Ilgwang Laundry is recognized as an essential landmark in Jinhae’s modern and contemporary history.
