주막은 시골 길가에서 밥과 술을 팔거나, 돈을 받고 나그네를 묵게 하는 집이다.
죽령은 옛날 경상도 북부지역과 한양을 연결하는 교통로로 많은 길손이 이용하였다. 교통이 발달하지 못한 과거에 먼 길을 가기 위해서는 주막에서 묵어갈 수밖에 없었는데, 그래서 큰 고개나 나루터에는 으레 주막이 있었다. 주막이 모여 있는 길거리를 ‘주막거리’라 불렀는데, 이곳 죽령에도 주막거리가 많았다.
가장 규모가 컸던 ‘무쇠다리 주막거리’가 있었던 수철리 마을 어귀를 비롯하여 ‘고갯마루 주막거리’, ‘느티정 주막거리’, 그리고 이곳 ‘주점 주막거리’가 대표적이다.
일제강점기에 국도와 중앙선 철도가 개통되면서 죽령옛길을 이용하는 사람들이 점차 줄어들자 주막도 없어지고 말았다.
빈 주막 터에서 들리는 바람소리, 새소리, 계곡의 물소리가 옛날 이 주막에서 긴 여정의 피로를 풀며 고갯길을 지나던 길손들의 이야기를 오늘 우리에게 들려주는 듯하다.

Tavern House on the Old Path of Jungnyeong Pass
This is the site of a tavern house that sold food, alcohol, and provided lodging to the people traveling on the old path of Jungnyeong Pass.
Jungnyeong Pass was a strategically important borderland between the Goguryeo (37 BCE-668 CE) and Silla (57 BCE-935) kingdoms. Up until the early 20th century, the path which went through the pass was one of the major routes connecting the northern areas of Gyeongsang-do Province to Seoul. At the time, the travelers embarking on this long journey needed places to sleep and have a meal on their way. Tavern houses were usually built near important mountain passes and ferry ports. However, with the development of railroads and other means of transportation, the number of people using this route started quickly decreasing, and soon the path fell into disuse and disappeared. In 1999, a 2.5 km-long section of the path between Huibangsa Train Station and the restaurant Jungnyeong Jumak was cleared and renovated.
The sounds of the blowing wind, singing birds, and running spring water create a peaceful atmosphere that would have been enjoyed by many travelers who stopped at this tavern house.

이곳은 죽령 옛길에서 밥과 술을 팔거나 돈을 받고 나그네를 묵게 하던 주막이 있던 곳이다.
삼국시대부터 이용된 이 길은 고구려와 신라의 국경에 자리한 군사적 요충지였으며, 20세기 초반까지 경상도 북부 지역과 한양을 연결하는 중요한 교통로로 이용되었다. 과거에 먼 길을 가기 위해서는 중간중간 식사나 잠을 해결할 수 있는 숙소인 주막을 이용해야 했고, 이 때문에 큰 고개나 나루터에는 주막이 모여 있는 거리가 형성되었다. 그러나 철도 등의 교통수단이 발달하면서 죽령 옛길을 이용하는 사람들이 크게 줄었고, 길은 방치되어 사라졌다. 1999년 희방사역에서 죽령 주막까지 약 2.5 km 길이의 길이 복원되었다.
빈 주막 터에서 들리는 바람소리, 새소리, 계곡의 물소리를 통해, 옛날 이 주막에 머물던 길손들이 즐겼던 호젓한 분위기를 느낄 수 있다.
