‘각자’는 나무 판이나 돌 등에 글자를 새기는 것 또는 새긴 글자를 말한다. 종묘 외곽 담장에는 82개의 각자가 있다. 이 각자 중 육십갑자를 새긴 73개는 『승정원일기』에 종묘 담장을 수리한 후 수리 연도를 새겨 후세에 알리라는 기록으로 보아 담장 공사를 했던 당시 연도를 새긴 것으로 보인다. 나머지 각자 9개에는 일본식 연호로 수리 연도가 새겨져 있다. 이는 『종묘일지』에 1932년과 1933년에 담장을 수리했다는 기록으로 확인할 수 있다.

Inscriptions on Outer Enclosure Wall of Jongmyo Shrine

On the outer enclosure wall of Jongmyo Shrine, there are 82 inscriptions that are presumed to record the years in which the wall was repaired or renovated. Among them, 73 record the year according to the sexagenary calendar cycle, while nine date to 1932 and 1933 during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) and record the year according to the Emperor of Japan’s reign year. This practice of inscribing the years of repairs and renovations on the outer enclosure wall of Jongmyo Shrine is described in historical records such as the Diaries of the Royal Secretariat (Seungjeongwon ilgi) and the Diaries of the Custodians of Jongmyo Shrine (Jongmyo ilji).

영문 해설 내용

종묘 외곽담장에는 담장을 수리·보수한 해를 기록한 것으로 보이는 글자가 총 82개소에 새겨져 있다. 이 중 73개는 60간지를 사용해 연도를 표시하였고, 9개는 1932년과 1933년에 해당하는 것으로 일제강점기인 1930년대에 일왕의 연호를 사용하였다. 담장의 수리·보수 연도를 종묘 외곽담장에 새기는 이러한 관행은 『승정원일기』와 『종묘일지』와 같은 문헌에 기록되어 있다.
