종묘 북쪽 담장 유구(Ⅰ)는 종로구 와룡동 2-4번지 일원에 있는데, 이것은 북신문(北神門) 서쪽 언덕에서 발견되었다. 북신문은 국왕이 창덕궁과 창경궁에서 종묘를 참배할 때 사용하기도 했던 종묘의 북문이다. 율곡로 도로 구조 개선 사업으로 실시한 2011년도 발굴조사에서 북신문 서쪽 담장의 기초로 추정되는 길이 약 27m 너비 약 1.3m의 2줄로 된 지대석이 확인되었다.
담장은 두 차례에 걸쳐 만든 것으로 밝혀졌는데, 먼저 만든 담장의 기초는 깬돌을 가장자리에 놓고 안쪽에 더 작은 깬돌을 채워서 만들었고, 후대의 것은 먼저 만든 담장의 기초를 그대로 두고 왼쪽으로 방향을 틀어 긴 네모꼴의 장대석(長臺石)을 잇대어 만들었다. 현재 바깥에 전시된 담장 기초는 나중에 만들어진 것이며, 먼저 만든 담장 기초는 원래 자리에 그대로 묻혀 있다. 파손되어 없어진 담장의 조성 연대는 정확히 알 수 없으나, 여러 차례 개축과 보수 과정을 거쳤으며, 일제강점기 종묘관통도로의 개설 공사를 시작한 1931년 6월경에 철거하였다.

Archaeological Remains of the Northern Enclosure Wall of Jongmyo Shrine (I)
These are the archaeological remains of the stone enclosure wall that surrounded Jongmyo, the royal ancestral shrine of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910). This section of the wall was located to the west of Jongmyo Shrine’s northern gate, which was often used by the Joseon kings on their way from the palace to perform ancestral veneration rituals. According to historical records, the wall underwent several reconstructions and renovations. It was demolished during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), presumably in June 1931 upon the construction of the present-day Yulgok-ro Road.
The site was excavated in 2011 as part of the Yulgok-ro Road Development Project. The excavation revealed two rows of base stones, measuring about 27 m in length and 1.3 m in width, that are presumed to be the foundation of the enclosure wall. The findings showed that the wall had been reconstructed once. The earlier foundation was made of chipped stones, with larger stones along the edges and smaller stones down the center. The later foundation was built atop the earlier foundation and was made of large rectangular hewn stones. The currently displayed remains are from the later foundation, with the earlier foundation buried in situ below.

이곳은 조선 왕실 사당인 종묘를 둘러싸고 있던 담장의 유구이다. 이 구간은 국왕이 궁궐에서 종묘에 참배하러 갈 때 사용하던 종묘 북신문의 서쪽 담장이다. 기록에 의하면 이 담장은 여러 차례 개축과 보수 과정을 거쳤으며, 지금의 율곡로 개설 공사를 시작한 1931년 6월경에 철거되었다.
