해설문

국문

장수읍의 향교 앞에 자리하고 있는 비로, 이 비석은 정유재란 때 장수향교를 지켜낸 정경손의 업적을 기리기 위해 1846년(헌종 12)에 세운 것이다. 정경손은 당시 장수향교를 지키는 노비의 신분이었다. 왜적이 향교에 불을 지르려 하자 앞을 가로막고 무릎을 꿇은 채로, “여기는 성전(聖殿)이니 함부로 들어가서는 안 된다. 꼭 들어가려거든 나를 죽이고 들어가라”고 호통을 쳤다. 그의 기개에 감동한 왜장은 ‘본성역물범(後來之倭 勿犯之意:이곳은 성스러운 곳이니 침범하지 말라)’라는 글씨를 써 주고 물러났다고 한다. 이로 인해 장수향교는 전국에 있는 향교 중에서 유일하게 온전히 보존될 수 있었으며, 다른 향교들을 다시 지을 때 모범이 되었다. 비석은 앞면에 호성충복정경손수명비(護聖忠僕丁敬孫竪名碑)라 쓰고 뒷면에는 그의 업적을 찬양하는 글씨를 새겼다. 정경손은 장수에서 절의를 지킨 3명(장수삼절) 중 한 명으로 추앙받고 있다.

영문

Stele of Jeong Gyeong-son

This stele was erected in 1846 to honor Jeong Gyeong-son, a loyal servant of Jangsuhyanggyo Local Confucian School.

During the Japanese invasions of 1597-1598, the invaders raided this school and attempted to set the buildings on fire. Jeong Gyeong-son, trying to block the enemies with his body, kneeled down in front of the main gate of the school and yelled, “This is a sacred place, and you will have to kill me first if you want to get into this place.” Impressed by Jeong’s courage and tenacity, the Japanese general left a message at the entrance of the school, saying “Do not violate this sacred place.” Thanks to his courageous actions, Jangsuhyanggyo was one of the few local Confucian schools that survived the Japanese invasions, while most of the others throughout the country were destroyed.
