정용해 효자 정려는 어려서부터 효성이 지극했던 정용해를 기리기 위해 용갈산에 세운 문이다.

정용해는 추운 겨울에도 병든 아버지를 위해 금마천의 얼음을 깨고 잉어를 잡아 드렸다.

벼슬길에 오른 정용해가 역적으로 몰려 귀양살이를 마치고 고향으로 돌아왔을 때, 어머니가 돌아가신 사실을 알고 효심을 다해 삼년상을 치른 뒤 자결하였다고 한다.

정용해 효자 정려는 지역 유림의 추천과 관찰사의 보고로 1893년(고종 30)에 세워졌다.

Commemorative Plaque of Jeong Yong-hae

This plaque was issued in 1893 to commemorate the filial devotion of Jeong Yong-hae, who is known to have lived during the early-to-mid 19th century. During the Joseon period (1392-1910), commemorative plaques or steles were bestowed by the government to honor a person’s patriotic loyalty, filial devotion, or matrimonial devotion and were meant to be hung on red gates or installed in front of the honored family’s home.

Jeong Yong-hae was known for his filial devotion. When his father fell ill, Jeong went fishing on the frozen Geummacheon Stream in the depths of winter to provide carp for his father. After his father passed away, Jeong became a civil official but was accused of treason and exiled. Having returned home from exile, Jeong found out that his mother had passed away in his absence. After completing the required multi-year mourning period, Jeong took his own life.

영문 해설 내용

이 정려는 19세기 초중반의 인물로 알려져 있는 정용해의 효성을 기리기 위해 1893년에 세워졌다. 조선시대에는 나라에서 충신, 효자, 열녀에게 정려 현판 또는 정려비를 내렸으며, 정려를 받은 사람의 집 앞에 붉은 문을 세우거나 정려각을 세워 모셨다.

정용해는 병든 아버지를 위해 추운 겨울에도 금마천의 얼음을 깨고 잉어를 잡아 드렸다. 아버지가 돌아가신 후 벼슬길에 올렸으나, 역적으로 몰려 귀양을 가게 되었다. 귀양에서 풀려나 고향으로 돌아왔을 때 어머니가 이미 돌아가신 사실을 알고 효심을 다해 삼년상을 치른 뒤 자결하였다고 한다.
