홍패와 백패는 과거에 합격했을 때 임금이 내렸던 합격 증서이다. 장계 홍패는 고려 충렬왕 31년(1305)에 장계가 받았던 증서이고, 장말손 백패는 조선 단종 1년(1453)에 장말손이 받았던 증서이다. 장말손 홍패는 세조 5년(1459)에 장말손이 받았던 증서이다. 이 증서들은 우리나라 과거 제도를 연구하는 데 귀중한 자료이다.

Red Certificate Issued to Jang Gye and Red and White Certificates Issued to Jang Mal-son

These three documents are certificates bestowed by the king to those who passed the state examinations. They include a red certificate issued in 1305 to Jang Gye, a civil official of the Goryeo period (918-1392), and a red certificate and white certificate issued in 1453 and 1459, respectively, to Jang Mal-son (1431-1486), a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910). The white certificate was given to those who passed the lower state examination and the red certificate was given to those who passed the higher state examination.

이 세 장의 문서는 과거에 합격했을 때 임금이 내렸던 합격 증서이다. 고려시대의 문신 장계가 1305년에 받은 홍패와, 조선시대의 문신 장말손(1431-1486)이 1453년과 1459년에 받은 백패와 홍패이다. 조선시대에는 소과 합격자와 대과 합격자에게 각각 백패와 홍패를 내렸다.
