국문

한국전쟁시 설악산 산악전투에서 중공군을 맞아 용감히 싸운 수도사단, 제1사단, 제5사단 소속의 순국장병과 군번없이 참전하여 산화한 학도결사대, 호림부대 용사들의 넋을 위로하고 공훈을 기리기 위하여 한국일보사와 제1군 사령부가 강원도의 후원을 받아 건립하였다.

“이름모를 자유용사의 비”라는 휘호는 당시 육군참모총장 김용배장군이 썼고, 비문은 시인이며 당시 제38사단장 장호강장군이 지었다.

Monument of Unknown Freedom Fighters

This monument was erected in 1965 to honor and recognize the loyal devotion of the soldiers who fought against the Chinese in the battles on Seoraksan Mountain during the Korean War (1950-1953). The soldiers belonged to the Republic of Korea Army’s Capital Infantry Division, 1st Infantry Division, 5th Infantry Division, and Horim Special Forces Unit, and were joined by civilian student fighters. The monument was erected by the Hankook Ilbo Newspaper and the 1st Republic of Korea Army Headquarters with the support of Gangwon-do Province.

The monument’s name was calligraphed by Army Chief of Staff Kim Yong-bae (1923-2006). The inscription inscribed at the bottom of the monument was composed by Jang Ho-gang (1916-2009), a poet and commander of the 38th Infantry Division.

영문 해설 내용

이 비석은 한국전쟁 당시 설악산 산악전투에서 중공군에 대항하여 싸우다 전사한 수도사단, 제1사단, 제5사단 소속의 장병, 특수부대인 호림부대와 민간 학도결사대 용사들의 넋을 위로하고 공훈을 기리기 위하여 1965년에 건립되었다. 한국일보사와 제1군 사령부가 강원도의 후원을 받아 건립하였다.

정면에 새긴 비석의 이름은 육군참모총장 김용배(1923-2006)가 썼고, 비석 아래에 새긴 비문은 시인이자 한국전쟁 당시 제38사단장이었던 장호강(1916-2009)이 지었다.
