해설문

국문

의왕 청계사 목조보살좌상은 현재 청계사 극락보전에 좌협시보살(左脇侍菩薩)로 봉안되어 있으며, 17세기 전반의 대표적인 조각승인 현진(玄眞)이 조성한 것으로 추정된다.

얼굴은 전체적으로 온화하며, 머리에는 나뭇잎과 불꽃무늬 장식이 화려한 보관(寶冠)을 쓰고 있다. 좌협시보살은 보편적으로 왼손을 위로, 오른손을 아래로 하여 앞으로 들고 있지만, 청계사 목조보살좌상은 오른손을 어깨 쪽으로 올리고 왼손은 무릎 위에 둔 채 정병(淨甁)을 잡고 있어 이례적이다.

의왕 청계사 목조보살좌상은 역사적 기록과 양식상 특징을 통해 17세기 전반에 조성된 불상의 특징을 잘 보여주며, 그 역사적ㆍ예술적 가치를 높게 인정받아 2024년에 경기도 유형문화유산으로 지정되었다.

Wooden Seated Bodhisattva of Cheonggyesa Temple, Uiwang

This wooden statue, the left attendant bodhisattva among the triad enshrined in Geungnakbojeon Hall of Cheonggyesa Temple, is presumed to have been made by Hyeonjin, a representative monk-sculptor of the early 17th century.

The face has a gentle expression, and the bodhisattva wears an ornate jeweled headdress decorated with leaf and flame motifs. In general, left attendant bodhisattvas are depicted with the left hand raised and the right hand lowered in front of the body. In this statue, however, the right hand is raised toward the shoulder, while the left hand rests on the knee holding a kundika, or bottle of pure water.

The statue clearly reflects the stylistic characteristics of Buddhist sculpture from the first half of the 17th century. In recognition of its historical and artistic value, it was designated as a Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Heritage in 2024.
