해설문

국문

의령 칠우정은 1914년에 벽진이씨의 이운수가 운학, 운택, 운조, 운모, 운태, 운한 등 여섯 명의 형제와 함께 지은 건물이다.

칠우정은 앞면 5칸, 옆면 2칸의 규모로, 옆에서 보았을 때 여덟 팔(八)자 모양인 팔작지붕 건물이다. 중앙의 대청마루 2칸을 중심으로 양쪽에 각각 2칸의 온돌방이 있으며 온돌방 앞으로 좁은 마루가 설치되어 있다. 건물은 두개의 단 위에 있으며, 가장 오른쪽의 기둥은 다른 기둥들과 다르게 아랫단에 두었다. 또 앞면에서 기둥을 받치는 받침돌은 둥근 모양으로 다듬은 돌을 사용하였고, 뒷면은 자연 그대로의 돌을 두었다.

칠우정은 보존상태가 좋고 장식수법이나 구조 등이 뛰어나 20세기 초기 지역건축의 양식을 이해하는데 중요한 자료로 평가된다.

영문

Chirujeong Hall, Uiryeong

This building was constructed in 1914 by Yi Un-su of the Byeokjin Yi clan and his six brothers. The name Chirujeong means “pavilion of seven friends,” referring to the importance of friendship among the brothers.

The building consists of a wooden-floored hall at the center and an underfloor-heated room to each side. It stands atop a tall two-tiered stone foundation. The top tier of the foundation does not extend all the way to the end of the building in order to create space for installing a firebox under the room on the far right. The pillars along the right side of the building were thus made longer than the rest of the pillars, extending to the foundation’s bottom tier.

Overall, the building is in good condition and is considered valuable in understanding the architectural style of the Uiryeong area in the early 20th century, such as the structure and decorative techniques.

영문 해설 내용

이곳은 벽진이씨 가문의 이운수가 여섯 형제와 함께 1914년에 지은 건물이다. 건물 이름인 칠우정은 “일곱 친구들의 정자”라는 뜻이다.

건물은 2단으로 된 높은 석축 기단 위에 지어졌다. 대청을 중심으로 양옆에 온돌방이 있으며, 온돌방 앞에는 툇마루를 두었다. 위층 기단은 건물의 맨 오른쪽 부분을 제외하고 설치되었는데, 이는 오른쪽 방 아래에 아궁이를 설치할 공간을 마련하기 위해서이다. 맨 오른쪽 기둥은 다른 기둥들보다 길게 만들어졌고, 아래층 기단 위에 올렸다.

전체적으로 보존상태가 좋고, 구조와 장식수법 등 20세기 초기 의령 지역의 건축 양식을 이해하는 데 중요한 자료로 평가된다.
