국문

『월인석보(月印釋譜)』는 세조 5년(1459)에 간행한 석가모니의 일대기이다. 이 책은 『월인천강지곡(月印千江之曲)』을 본문으로 하고, 『석보상절(釋譜詳節)』을 그에 대한 주석 형식으로 합하여 간행한 것이다.

『월인석보』는 총 25권으로 이루어진 것으로 추정되며, 현재까지 총 19권이 발견되었다. 이 중 2000년 순창 구암사에서 발견된 『월인석보』 권15는 1권 1책으로 구성되어 있다. 총 장수는 87장이고 비단이 섞인 한지에 인쇄되었다. 비록 앞뒤의 표지가 없으나, 본문에는 누락이 전혀 없는 완전한 상태이다.

『석보상절』은 세조가 수양대군 시절 석가모니의 일대기를 한글로 번역하여 세종 29년(1447)에 간행한 책이며, 『월인천강지곡』은 세종 31년(1449)에 지은 찬불가이다. 조선 전기 2대에 걸쳐 임금이 편찬, 간행한 것으로, 석가모니 일대기와 주요 설법을 한글로 번역하여 편찬한 최초의 책이라는 점에서 가치가 매우 높다.

Worin seokbo (Episodes from the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha), Volume 15

This is Volume 15 of Episodes from the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha (Worin seokbo), a biography of Sakyamuni Buddha published by King Sejo (r. 1455-1468) in 1459.

The book consists of Songs of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers (Worin cheongangjigok) as its main text, with Details of the Buddha's Geneology (Seokbo sangjeol) as a commentary. Songs of the Moon's Reflection on a Thousand Rivers was compiled by King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) in 1449. Details of the Buddha's Geneology is a biography of Sakyamuni Buddha, translated from classical Chinese into the Korean vernacular alphabet Hangeul, that was previously published in 1447 by King Sejo during his time as a prince. The book has great value as a work compiled and published over the reigns of two kings, and also as the first example of the biography of the Buddha being published in Hangeul.

Episodes from the Life of Sakyamuni Buddha is presumed to originally consist of 25 volumes, but only 19 volumes have been found. This single book of Volume 15 was found in 2000 in Guamsa Temple, Sunchang. There are 87 pages in total, each was printed on a mulberry paper mixed with silk. Apart from the missing front and back covers, the volume is complete without any omission.
