Pagoda Tree of Yuktong-ri, Wolseong

Pagoda tree (Sophora japonica L.) is a deciduous broadleaf tree in the legume family, Fabaceae. It is native to in Korea and China. The pagoda tree has been referred to as a “scholars’ tree” and “tree of fortune” and is thus often planted in scholars’ houses, Confucian academies and schools, Buddhist temples, and royal palaces. Its fruits are also used in traditional medicine.

The legend says that this pagoda tree in Yuktong-ri Village was planted in the mid-14th century by a young man named Kim Yeong-dong before he went to war. At the time, both Red Turbans and Japanese pirates were attacking the country. As he said his final goodbyes to his parents, he told them “If I do not return, please consider this tree your son and take good care of it.” Kim is said to have died in battle, and so his parents raised this tree with the utmost care.

A ritual to wish for a bountiful harvest and the wellbeing of the village is held by the locals in front of this tree on the first full moon of the lunar year.
