마을에서는 매년 음력 정월 대보름(음력 1월 15일) 아침 동이 틀 무렵(오전 6시) 완도 청해진 유적(사적 제308호) 내에 있는 당집에서 나라의 번영과 발전·마을의 무사태평과 각 가정의 평안을 기원하는 당제를 지낸다. 모시는 신격으로는 장보고·송징·정년·혜일대사 등 네분이다.

오전에 당제가 모두 끝나면 오후에는 각 가정을 방문하여 지진밟기를 하고, 오후 5시 무렵 갯가에서 바다에서의 무사고와 풍어를 기원하는 갯제를 지낸다.

Tutelary Rituals of Jangjwa-ri, Wando

The tutelary rituals of Jangjwa-ri Village are performed annually on the first full moon of the lunar year to wish for the prosperity of the country and the wellbeing of the village. The events include an offering ritual performed at dawn (around 6 am) at the local tutelary shrine, visits to each family in the village throughout the afternoon to perform shamanistic rituals warding off evil spirits and blessing the household, and an offering ritual performed at dusk (around 5 pm) by the sea to wish for the safety of the fishermen and a bountiful fishing harvest.

Jangjwa-ri Village is located at the site of Jeonghaejin Garrison (Historic Site), which was established in 828 by the admiral Jang Bo-go (?-846) as a naval base and a trading post during the Unified Silla period (676-935). Due to this history, the locals regard Jang Bo-go, along with the Buddhist monk Hyeil and the admirals Song Jing and Jeong Nyeon, as their guardian deities. The local tutelary shrine, which was built to honor them, is located within the garrison site.

영문 해설 내용

장좌리에서 매년 정월 대보름에 나라의 번영과 발전, 마을의 무사태평, 각 가정의 평안을 기원하며 지내는 마을 제사이다. 당제는 아침 동일 틀 무렵(오전 6시) 당집에서 시작된다. 당제가 끝난 뒤 오후에는 각 가정을 방문하여 악귀와 잡신을 물리치고 복을 축원한다. 오후 5시 무렵에는 바다에서의 무사고와 풍어를 기원하는 제사를 바닷가에서 지낸다.

장좌리는 통일신라시대 장보고가 828년 해군기지이자 무역기지인 청해진을 설치했던 곳이다. 장좌리 주민들은 장보고, 송징 장군, 정년 장군, 혜일 대사를 마을을 수호하는 신으로 여기고 있으며, 청해진 유적에는 이들을 모신 당집이 있다.
