동백나무는 따뜻한 지방에서 자라는 나무이고, 난대 식물 중 가장 북쪽에서 자라기 때문에 평균 기온에 따라 식물들이 자랄 수 있는 지역을 구분하는 데 활용된다. 대청도는 동백나무가 자랄 수 있는 최북단 한계 지역으로 그 학술적 가치를 인정받아 천연기념물로 지정되었다. 대청도에 전해오는 전설에 의하면, 남쪽의 동백꽃이 피는 섬 총각과 대청도 처녀가 만나 결혼하여 행복하게 살았다. 어느 날 남편에게 급한 일이 생겨 남편 홀로 고향에 돌아가게 되자, 아내는 돌아올 때 동백 씨를 가져올 것을 부탁했다. 그러나 고향으로 간 남편은 일 년이 넘도록 돌아오지 않았고 남편을 애타게 기다리던 아내는 병이 들어 죽었다. 뒤늦게 돌아온 남편은 아내의 무덤에 엎드려 하염없이 울었다고 한다. 이때 남편의 주머니에서 떨어진 동백 씨가 싹이 터서 지금의 동백나무 숲이 되었다고 전해진다.

Northernmost Population of Common Camellias on Daecheongdo Island, Ongjin
Common camellia (Camellia japonica L.) is an evergreen broadleaf tree in the family Theaceae. It is sometimes called the “rose of winter” as its flowers bloom from November to April. In Korean, it is also known as haehonghwa, meaning “red flowers by the sea.”
Daecheongdo Island is the northernmost area in Korea where common camellia can grow. There is a local legend about how this camellia forest first appeared. It says that once there lived a girl here who married a man from a southern island where camellia trees bloomed. One day, as her husband was heading off to visit his family on his home island, she asked him to bring camellia seeds. A year went by, but her husband did not return. And in the meanwhile, she became ill and died without seeing her husband again. When he finally came back and saw her tomb, he fell to the ground and cried desperately. At that moment, the camellia seeds fell out of his pocket and sprouted to become the forest that we see today.

동백나무는 차나무과에 속하는 상록활엽교목이다. 겨울에 꽃이 피기 때문에 rose of winter 라고도 불리고, 한국에서는 바닷가에서 피는 붉은 꽃이라 하여 ‘해홍화’라고도 불린다.
