해설문

국문

이 불상은 무영탑 전설이 전해지는 영지에 인접해 있다. 불상은 심하게 마모된 상태이지만, 광배(光背)와 대좌(臺座)까지 갖춘 규모가 큰 여래좌상이다. 불상과 한 돌에 새긴 광배에는 불꽃무늬와 함께 작은 부처를 새겼다. 불상은 오른쪽 어깨를 드러낸 우견편단*과 항마촉지인*을 한 손 모양이 석굴암 본존상의 모습을 충실히 따르고 있음을 알 수 있다. 8각형인 대좌는 8각 3단의 연화대좌로 조각이 섬세하고 정교하다.

이 불상은 건장한 신체와 부피감 있는 무릎 등에서 석굴암 본존을 이은 통일신라 시대 조성임이 짐작된다. 영지에 인접해 있어 아사달이 아사녀의 명복을 빌기 위해 영지 곁에 모셔졌다는 이야기가 전한다.

• 항마촉지인(降魔觸地印) : 좌선할 때의 손 모양에서 오른손을 풀어서 오른쪽 무릎에 얹고 손가락으로 땅을 가리키는 손 모양. 석가모니가 수행을 방해하는 모든 악마를 항복시키고 성취한 정각(正覺)을 지신(地神)이 증명하였음을 상징한다.

영문

Stone Seated Buddha of Yeongji Pond

This stone statue located next to Yeongji Pond depicts a seated buddha. It is presumed to date to the Unified Silla period (668-935).

Although the statue is severely eroded, it is complete with a large halo and pedestal. The pedestal is decorated with lotus pattern and supported by an octagonal base. The body and halo are carved from a single stone. The halo is engraved with flames and small buddhas. The robes are draped over the left shoulder. The right hand reaches down toward the ground, and the left hand rests on the lap, indicating the buddha’s defeat of worldly desires and his attainment of spiritual enlightenment. The body is robust and the knees are voluminous.
