이곳은 안중근 의사의 영정과 위패를 봉안하고 매년 양력 3월 26일 추모 제향을 봉행하는 사당이다.
안중근 의사의 후손들이 제사를 지내지 못하고 있는 상황을 안타까워한 장흥군 유림과 죽산 안씨 문중의 발의로 1955년 건립되었다. 이후 유림 안홍천이 이승만 대통령으로부터 해동명월(대한민국을 밝게 비추라는 뜻)의 휘호를 받아 현판을 걸고 해동사로 명명하게 되었다.
안중근 의사의 본관은 순흥이며 고려시대 유학자인 문성공 회헌 안향의 26대손으로, 1879년 9월 2일에 황해도 해주에서 성균관 진사 안태훈의 장남으로 태어났으며 1909년 10월 하얼빈역에서 침략의 원흉 이토 히로부미를 저격하고 체포되어 뤼순 감옥에서 사형선고를 받고 1910년 3월 26일 순국하였다.
대한민국 정부는 안중근 의사의 공훈을 기리어 1962년 건국훈장 대한민국장을 추서하였으며, 국가보훈부는 2017년 11월 이곳을 현충시설로 지정하였다.

Shrine of An Jung-geun (Haedongsa Shrine)
Haedongsa Shrine houses the portrait and spirit tablet of An Jung-geun (1879-1910), a renowned independence activist of the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). An annual veneration ritual is performed here on March 26, the anniversary of An’s death.
An Jung-geun was born into the Sunheung An clan in Haeju, Hwanghae-do Province (today’s North Korea). In 1909, he was arrested at Harbin Railway Station for shooting the Resident-General of Korea Ito Hirobumi (1841-1909), who had spearheaded Japan’s plundering of Korea, and sentenced to death at the Lüshun Russo-Japanese Prison. In 1962, in recognition of his outstanding meritorious services, the Korean government posthumously awarded him the Republic of Korea Medal, the highest among the Orders of Merit for National Foundation.
This shrine was founded in 1955 upon the initiative of members of the local Confucian community and the Juksan An clan, who recognized the unfortunate situation of An Jung-geun having no sons to perform veneration rituals in his honor. Syngman Rhee (1875-1965), the first president of the Republic of Korea, bestowed the shrine with handwritten calligraphy plaque meaning “A Place that Brightly Illuminates the Republic of Korea.” Based on this the shrine was named “Haedongsa,” meaning “Shrine of the (Land to the) East of the Sea,” in reference to Korea.
In 2017, Haedongsa Shrine was designated as a Memorial Facility of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. In 2019, it was designated as a Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Material.

안중근은 순흥안씨로 황해도 해주에서 태어났다. 1909년 하얼빈역에서 일제의 조선 침탈을 주도한 이토 히로부미(1841-1909)를 저격하였으며, 체포되어 뤼순 감옥에서 사형을 선고받고 순국하였다. 대한민국 정부는 그의 공훈을 기려 1962년 건국훈장 대한민국장을 추서하였다.
