Gwibong Head House, Andong

This is the head house of the descendants of Kim Su-il (1528-1583, pen name: Gwibong) of the Uiseong Kim Clan. A head house is a residence passed down among the male successors of a family lineage. The house was established in 1660 when Kim Su-il, the second son of Kim Jin (1500-1580), branched out from the family’s main head house. It was rebuilt in 1888 by his descendant Kim Ju-byeong. Cheonjeon-ri Village, where the house is located, has been home to the Uiseong Kim Clan since the late 14th century when Kim Su-il’s great-grandfather Kim Man-geun settled in the area.

The house consists of a gate quarters, a main quarters, and a shrine. The main quarters has a square layout with a courtyard in the middle. The front section serves as the men’s quarters, while the rear section serves as the women’s quarters. An inner gate used to enter the courtyard divides the men’s quarters section into two parts. The right part features a slightly taller roof, indicating that it was used by the master of the house.

The shrine holds the spirit tablet of Kim Su-il’s first son Kim Yong (1557-1620). Also kept in the house is the Diary of Royal Attendant (Hojong ilgi), which was written by Kim Yong as he escorted King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608) and the royal family members to refuge near the northern border of the Korean Peninsula during the Japanese invasion of 1592.
