해설문

국문

매화나무는 오래전부터 우리나라 각지에 심어 오던 관상용 식물이다. 이른 봄에 피어나는 단아한 꽃과 깊은 꽃향기는 우리 조상들의 시서화(詩書畵) 등에 빠짐없이 등장할 만큼 사랑을 받아 왔다.

선암사 경내에는 수령이 350∼650년에 이르는 매화나무 50여 그루가 자라고 있으며, 이 매화나무들을 가리켜 선암매라고 부른다. 이 가운데 흰 매화(백매)와 붉은 매화(홍매)가 천연기념물로 지정되었다. 

선암매는 3월 말경에 만개하여 장관을 이룬다. 특히 무우전 돌담길을 따라 20여 그루의 선암매가 무리 지어 꽃망울을 터뜨린다.

영문

Seonammae Plums of Seonamsa Temple, Suncheon

Plum (Prunus mume Siebold et Zucc.) is a deciduous tree in the Rose family (Rosaceae). Its flowers, which come in varying shades of white, pink, and red, begin to bloom in April and produce a strong fragrant scent. Its fruits, which resemble apricots and are very sour, turn from a light green to a light orange as they ripen between June and July. Both the flowers and fruits are used to make tea, while the fruits can also be pickled or used to make jam or alcohol.

The grounds of Seonamsa Temple feature about fifty plum trees ranging in age from 350 to 650 years old, which create a spectacular sight when they bloom each year in late March. Notably, the twenty-some plum trees growing along the stone enclosure wall of Muujeon Hall are known to bloom all at the same time. Among them, one white plum tree and one red plum tree were jointly designated as a Natural Monument in 2007 in recognition of their beautiful shape and great condition.

영문 해설 내용

매화나무는 장미과의 낙엽소교목이다. 꽃은 연한 분홍색으로 4월에 피며 향기가 강하다. 열매인 매실은 6-7월경이 되면 연두색 또는 황색으로 익으며, 살구와 비슷하게 생겼고 맛이 매우 시다. 매화와 매실은 차를 만드는 데 쓰이고, 매실로는 장아찌, 청, 술 등을 담가 먹기도 한다.
