서재(석척재) 西齋(夕惕齋)

서재는 서원 강당의 서쪽 건물로 원생들이 수학하며 생활하던 공간이다.

서재의 현판인 ‘석척재(夕惕齋)’는 『주역』의 ‘건건석척(乾健夕惕)’에서 유래한 말로 “군자는 낮이나 밤이나 힘쓰고 조심한다”라는 뜻이다. 즉 저녁이 되어도 낮과 같이 마음을 가다듬어야 한다는 것이다.

서재인 석척재는 문헌서원이 사액*서원이 되던 1612년에 세웠다. ‘석천재’란 현판은 동춘당 송준길이 썼다고 한다.

문헌서원은 1871년(고종 8) 흥선대원군의 서원철폐령으로 문을 닫았으나 1969년에 현재의 묘역 근처로 옮겨 복원하고, 다시 2007년~2013년까지 서원을 정비하는 과정에서 서재도 새롭게 건축되었다

조선 후기에 서원의 원생으로 이름을 올려 군역 등의 의무를 피하려는 사람이 늘어나자 1707년(숙종 33) 사액서원의 서재생을 20명으로 정하고 명단을 뜻하는 ‘교안’에 이름을 기록하게 하였다.

Seokcheokjae Hall (West Dormitory)

Seokcheokjae Hall is the west dormitory of Munheonseowon Confucian Academy. It is located in front of Jinsudang Lecture Hall and stands opposite from Jonyangjae Hall, the east dormitory. In a Confucian academy, the east and west dormitories were used, respectively, by the senior and the junior students.

During the late period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), the number of people attempting to avoid military service by registering as students of Confucian academies grew. So, in 1707, a limit of 20 people was placed on the number of junior students allowed at a Confucian academy and their names were to be recorded.

Munheonseowon Confucian Academy was demolished in 1871 when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. It was rebuilt in 1969. It was renovated between 2007 and 2013, at which time Seokcheokjae Hall was newly built.

The name Seokcheokjae means “Hall of Evening Apprehension” and comes from a passage in Book of Changes that states that “the superior man is active and vigilant all the day, and in the evening still careful and apprehensive.” The building’s wooden name plaque is said to have been calligraphed by the scholar and civil official Song Jun-gil (1606-1672).

영문 해설 내용

석척재는 문헌서원의 서재이다. 진수당 앞에 있으며, 동재인 존양재 맞은편에 있다. 서원에서 동재는 상급생들이, 서재는 하급생들이 사용하였다.

조선 후기에 서원의 원생으로 이름을 올려 군역의 의무를 피하려는 사람들이 늘어나자, 1707년 서원의 서재 인원을 20명으로 한정하고 이름을 기록하게 하였다.

문헌서원은 1871년 서원철폐령으로 철거되었다가, 1969년에 다시 지었다. 2007년부터 2013년까지 서원을 정비하는 과정에서 서재 건물도 새로 지었다.

서재의 이름인 석척재는 『주역』에서 따온 말로 “군자는 낮이나 밤이나 힘쓰고 조심한다”라는 뜻을 담고 있다. 정면에 걸린 현판의 글씨는 조선시대의 학자이자 문신인 송준길(1606-1672)이 썼다고 한다.
