사창리라는 지명은 조선시대 사탄내면에 창고가 있었다 하여 사창리로 되었으며, 1647년에 편찬된 춘천지에는 내창리, 1834년 김정호의 청구도에는 사탄리, 1914년 조선총독부행정구역명칭일람에는 창리로 표기 되었으며, 1914년 행정구역 개편을 정리한 조선전도부군면리동명칭일람(1917년 편찬)에 창리와 솔대리 일부를 병합하여 사창리로 되었다.

사창리는 조선시대 춘천도호부 사탄내면에 속해 있었는데, 사탄내면은 세종실록지리지(1454) 및 신증동국여지승람(1530)에 사탄향(史呑鄕)이라 기록되어 있다. 사탄(史呑)에 대한 정확한 어원은 아직 밝혀지지 않았으나, 사(史)는 ‘아름답다’는 뜻이 있으며 탄(呑)은 땅의 옛날 발음 [딴]을 음차하여 표기하던 한자이기도 하다. 이렇게 볼 때 사탄(史呑)은 「아름다운 고장」이라는 뜻으로 추정된다.

조선시대 사탄(史呑)에는 관에서 운영하는 창고가 있어 거두어들인 조세를 보관하고, 봄에 곡식이 부족할 때 백성들에게 대여하며, 때론 객관(客館)으로서의 역할도 하였다.

1757~1765년에 편찬된 여지도서에 의하면 사탄에는 내ㆍ외 각각 창고가 있었으며, 사탄외창은 관아(춘천)의 서쪽 75리에 16칸이고, 사탄내창은 관아(춘천)의 서쪽 1백리에 20칸 크기 였다고 한다.

사탄내창의 정확한 위치는 알 수 없으나 이곳으로부터 약 150미터 떨어진 사내면 사창2리 466-2번지 부근으로 추정된다.

History of the Sachang-ri Village’s Name

The name Sachang-ri, meaning “Village of the Storehouse in Satan,” comes from the fact that there was a government storehouse (chang, 창) located in Satannae-myeon Township (later shortened to the current Sanae-myeon) during the Joseon period (1392-1910).

Sachang-ri belonged to Satannae-myeon Township, which was under the jurisdiction of the Chuncheondohobu Local Government. The government storehouse located here housed grain taxes, which were sometimes lent to the locals when food was lacking in spring. It also sometimes served as an inn.

According to the Illustrated Records of the Provinces (1757-1765), there was an outer storehouse (oechang) and an inner storehouse (naechang) in Satan. They were located 30 km and 40 km to the west of the local government in Chuncheon and measured 16 and 20 architectural intervals in width, respectively. The exact location of the inner warehouse is unknown, but it is presumed to have been in the vicinity of 466-2 Sachang-ri, Sanae-myeon, which is about 150 m from this location.

Satannae-myeon was referred to as Satanhyang in the Geography Section of the Annals of King Sejong (1454) and the Newly Augmented Geographical Conspectus of the Eastern Kingdom (1530). The exact origin of the name Satan is unknown, but it is presumed to mean “beautiful land,” with the Chinese character sa (史) meaning “beautiful” and the Chinese character tan (呑) being used as a homophone for the pure Korean word ttang (땅), meaning “land.”

The name of the Sachang-ri area has been changed several times. The village was recorded under several names, such as Naechang-ri (Gazeteer of Chuncheon, 1647), Satan-ri (Map of Korea, 1834), and Chang-ri (Government-General of Korea Administrative District Name Catalog, 1914). In 1914, part of Soldae-ri was joined with Chang-ri under the new name Sachang-ri during a reorganization of administrative districts, which is recorded in the Complete Administrative District Name Catalogue of Korea (1917).
