해설문
국문
호국용변어정(護國龍變魚井)이라 불리는 신라시대 우물이다. 우물 틀의 내부는 원형, 외부는 팔각인데, 이는 불교의 원융*과 팔정도*를 상징한다고 한다.
『삼국유사』에 이 우물에 관한 흥미로운 이야기가 전해 내려온다. 분황사 우물과 금학산(琴鶴山) 기슭 동천사(東泉寺)의 동지와 청지라는 우물에 신라를 지키는 세 마리의 호국룡이 살았다. 원성왕 11년(795) 당나라 사신이 주술을 써서 이 용들을 물고기로 둔갑시켜 잡아갔다. 이 호국룡의 부인이라는 두 여인이 왕 앞에 나타나 남편을 찾아줄 것을 청하였다. 왕은 사람을 시켜 물고기를 다시 빼앗아 각각의 우물에 놓아주자, 물이 한 길이나 솟아 오르고 용들이 기뻐하며 뛰었고, 당나라 사람들은 왕의 밝은 지혜에 감복했다고 한다.
조선시대에는 분황사에 있던 모든 돌부처의 목을 잘라 이 우물에 넣었다는 아픈 역사를 간직하고 있다. 남아있는 통일신라시대의 돌우물 가운데 가장 크고 우수한 것이며, 지금도 사용될 만큼 보존 상태가 양호하다.

영문
Stone Well of Bunhwangsa Temple
This stone well located in Bunhwangsa Temple dates to the Unified Silla period (668-935). Among the extant wells dating to this period, this well is the largest, most outstanding, and is in such good condition that it can still be used to this day. The inside of the well is circular, while the exterior is octagonal. This design is said to symbolize the concepts of perfect interfusion (i.e. the mutual containment of all phenomena) and the noble eightfold path.
A legend about this well is told in the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa). It is said that there were three guardian dragons who protected the Silla kingdom. One lived in this well, and the other two lived in wells at Dongcheonsa Temple on the slope of Geumhaksan Mountain. In 795, an envoy of Tang China visited Silla and used a magic spell to transform the dragons into fish and capture them. Two women, who were the wives of the dragons, came before King Wonseong (r. 785-798) of Silla and pleaded that their husbands be found. The king ordered that the fish be returned to their wells. Upon their return water spurted out of the well and the dragons jumped with joy, causing the Tang people to admire the king’s wisdom.
