Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Bukgosa Temple

This gilded wooden statue enshrined in Geungnakjeon Hall of Bukgosa Temple depicts Amitabha, the Buddha of Western Paradise. It is believed that all beings who call the name of Amitabha while reflecting on his meritorious virtues can be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West.

The statue was created in 1657 by the monk artisans Seungil, Cheoyeong, and Dojam at Unsuam Hermitage in Deogyusan Mountain, Muju. After being relocated several times, it was regilded and enshrined at Bukgosa Temple in 1928.

Amitabha is depicted with a benevolent smile on his face. His hands rest above his lap, with the thumbs and middle fingers of each hand touching. The statue displays characteristics of 17th-century Buddhist sculpture, such as the balanced bodily proportions and the long robe covering the Buddha’s legs.
