부용대는 ‘부용을 내려보는 언덕’이라는 뜻이다. ‘부용(芙蓉)’은 연꽃을 뜻하며, 하회마을의 또 다른 이름이기도 하다. 여기에서 려다보면 하회마을은 물위에 떠 있는 한송이 연꽃처럼 보여 마을의 모양을 ‘연화부수형(蓮花浮水形)’이라 한다. ‘하회(河回)’라는 이름처럼 낙동강이 마을을 휘돌아 나가는 모습도 한눈에 볼 수 있다. 부용대 허리 부분에는 류운룡, 류성룡 형제의 두 정사를 연결하는 ‘층길’이 나있는데 이 길로 형제가 왕래하며 우애를 다졌다고 한다. 류원지는 부용대에서 바라본 하회의 아름다운 경치를 읊어 ‘하회16경(河回16景)’이라 하였다.부용대에서 하회솔숲까지 하회마을의 옛 선비들이 선유줄불놀이를 하였던 곳이기도 하다.

부용대는 ‘연꽃을 내려다보는 언덕’이라는 뜻이다. 이곳에서 내려다보면 하회마을이 물 위에 떠 있는 한 송이 연꽃처럼 보이기 때문에 이런 이름이 붙었다. 하회마을, 마을 앞의 만송정숲, 그리고 마을 전체를 휘감아 도는 낙동강이 어우러진 아름다운 경치를 즐길 수 있는 곳이다.

류운룡(柳雲龍, 1539~1601), 류성룡(柳成龍, 1542~1607) 형제는 부용대 좌우에 각각 겸암정사와 옥연정사를 짓고 학문에 힘쓰며 제자들을 가르쳤다. 부용대 절벽의 허리 부분에는 두 정사를 잇는 좁은 벼랑길이 있는데, 형제는 이 길로 서로 왕래하며 우애를 다졌다고 한다.

부용대는 하회마을 옛 선비들이 매년 음력 7월 선유줄불놀이를 즐기던 곳이기도 하다. 부용대와 만송정 숲 사이에 동아줄을 걸고 숯가루를 넣은 주머니를 매달아 불을 붙이고 놀았으며, 배를 띄워 술을 마시고 시를 짓기도 했다.

Buyongdae Cliff

This cliff is located across the Nakdonggang River from the historic Hahoe Village. It commands a splendid aerial view of the village and its surrounding scenery. Its name means “a cliff for viewing a lotus flower,” as Hahoe Village as seen from this cliff is said to look like a lotus flower floating on water.

The renowned brothers Ryu Un-ryong (1539-1601) and Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607) built residences on either side of this cliff in their latter days, where they devoted themselves to their studies and to teaching students. On the face of the cliff, there is a very narrow path that was used by the brothers to come and go to each other’s house.

A firework boat festival was held at this cliff by the locals annually in the 7th lunar month. A number of ropes were hung across the Nakdonggang River from Buyongdae Cliff to the Pinewoods of Mansongjeong Pavilion. Many mulberry paper pouches filled with charcoal powder were hung from the rope and lit on fire. As the burning embers fell from the pouch, it created a shower of fireworks in all directions. During the festival, literati riding on boats would drink alcohol, write poetry, sing songs, and enjoy music.
