국문
장대(將臺)는 성(城)이나 보(堡)* 등에 있는 건물로, 장수가 지휘를 하던 곳을 말한다. 영조 40년(1764)에 그린 것으로 추정되는 「상당산성도」에 장대 2곳이 표현되어 있어, 상당산성에는 장대가 서쪽과 동쪽 2곳에 설치되었던 것을 알 수 있다.
동장대는 보화정(輔和亭)이라고도 부르는데, 서장대(제승당)에서 내려다볼 수 있는 낮은 곳에 있다. 보화정의 건립에 대해서는 영조 23년(1747)에 충청도 병마절도사를 지낸 이필구(李必耈)가 지은 「보화정기(輔和亭記)」에 남아 있다. ‘보화정’은 ‘모든 주민들이 화합된 의지로 지킨다’는 뜻으로, 상당산성의 대대적인 보수 공사 때 가장 마지막에 완성된 건물이다.
현재의 건물은 이전에 훼손되었던 것을 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸 규모로 새롭게 복원한 것이다.

Bohwajeong Pavilion (Eastern Command Post) – Sangdangsanseong Fortress, Cheongju
Bohwajeong Pavilion is the eastern command post of Sangdangsanseong Fortress. A command post, called jangdae in Korean, is the center from which a military commander would direct soldiers during military drills and war. According to the Map of Sangdangsanseong Fortress, painted presumably in 1764, the fortress had both an east and west command post. The name Bohwajeong means “Pavilion of Harmonious Assistance” and conveys how the fortress is to be protected through the joint efforts of the local people.
This pavilion is known to have been the last building completed during the large-scale renovation of the fortress in the 17th-18th centuries. With the original building having been lost, the current building was newly built in 1992 based on historical records such as the Record of Bohwajeong Pavilion written in 1747 by the Chungcheong-do regional army commander Yi Pil-gu. It has a hip-and-gable roof and measures three sections wide by two sections deep.
영문 해설 내용
보화정은 상당산성의 동쪽 장대로, 장대는 전쟁 또는 군사훈련 시에 대장이 군사들을 지휘하기 위해 지은 건물이다. 1764년에 그린 것으로 추정되는 「상당산성도」에 따르면 상당산성에는 장대가 서쪽과 동쪽 2곳에 설치되어 있었다. 보화정이라는 이름은 ‘모든 주민들이 화합된 의지로 지켜내는 곳’이라는 뜻이다.
동장대는 17-18세기 상당산성이 대대적으로 보수되던 시기에 가장 마지막에 완성된 건물이다. 원래의 건물은 훼손되었고, 지금의 건물은 충청도 병마절도사를 지낸 이필구가 1747년에 지은 「보화정기(輔和亭記)」 등의 기록을 참고하여 1992년에 다시 지었다. 정면 3칸, 측면 2칸 규모의 팔작지붕 건물이다.
