해설문

국문

앞으로 약간 기울어진 바위 면에 연잎 모양으로 얕게 감실을 파고 불상을 새겼다.

머리는 머리카락이 곱슬곱슬 말려 소라처럼 생긴 나발(螺髮)이다. 옷은 양 어깨를 덮고 가슴을 일부 드러내 속옷의 윗단만 경사지게 나타내었다. 두 손은 아랫배 부근에서 옷자락 안으로 숨기고 있다. 가부좌(跏趺坐)한 하체는 가운데로 향하는 옷주름 몇 개로 두툼하게 표현되었다. 다리 아래 얕게 음각된 연꽃잎은 연화대좌(蓮花臺座)로 보인다.

상체에 비해 하체의 폭이 좁아 다소 왜소한 느낌을 주지만, 온화한 얼굴 표정과 단정한 자세는 명상에 잠긴 부처의 자비심이 효과적으로 표현된 통일신라시대 불상이다.

Rock-carved Buddha of Borisa Temple

This rock carving depicting a buddha is located on a rock face within the premises of Borisa Temple. It is presumed to date to the Unified Silla period (668-935).

The buddha is depicted seated cross-legged atop a lotus pedestal. The area around the head is carved to depict a halo. The buddha is depicted with curly hair. The outer robes are draped across both shoulders and hang to reveal part of the chest and inner robes. The hands are hidden in the sleeves of the robe near the lap. The lower body is narrower than the upper body creating a dwarfed image, yet the buddha’s merciful nature is well expressed in the peaceful facial expression and proper meditative posture.
