Rock-carved Standing Buddha of Baegundae Rock

This rock carving located on the face of a large rock outcrop on Maseoksan Mountain depicts a standing buddha. It is presumed to date to the Unified Silla period (668-935).

The carving measures 4.6 m in height. There is a large protuberance on the top of the head, which symbolizes the buddha’s wisdom, and long, drooping ears. The round face is expressionless with half-open eyes, eyebrows that connect to a large nose, tightly pursed lips. There are three creases encircling the neck that represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering. The shoulders are rounded and the waist is thin. The right arm is bent with the hand at the chest, while the left arm rests along the side of the body with the palm facing outward. The thumb, index, and ring fingers of the right hand are touching. The only clothing depicted are three folds of a robe above the left hand, which suggests that the carving was left incomplete.
