해설문
국문
우재 손중돈(愚齋 孫仲暾, 1463∼1529)을 추모하고 그의 높은 학덕을 기리기 위해 각지의 유생이 힘을 모아 숙종 21년(1695)에 세운 서원이다. 흥선대원군의 서원철폐령으로 건물 대부분이 헐렸는데, 1960년에 묘우와 강당, 신문(神門) 등을 다시 세우고 1986년 동·서재와 신도비각을, 1999년 탁청루를 복원하였다. 매년 음력 2월과 9월 하순에 제사를 지낸다.
손중돈은 양민공 손소(襄敏公 孫昭)의 아들로 김종직(金宗直)의 문인이다. 성종 13년(1482) 과거에 급제하여 여러 관직을 거친 뒤 우참찬에 이르렀고, 중종 때 청백리(淸白吏)*에 선정되었다.
- 청백리(淸白吏): 관직 수행 능력과 청렴(淸廉)·근검(勤儉)·도덕(道德)·경효(敬孝)·인의(仁義) 등의 덕목을 겸비한 조선시대의 이상적(理想的)인 관료상으로, 의정부(議政府)에서 뽑은 관직자에게 주어진 호칭. 총 217명이 배출되었다.

Donggangseowon Confucian Academy
A Confucian academy, called seowon in Korean, is a private education institution of the Joseon period (1392-1910) that usually combined the functions of a Confucian shrine and a lecture hall.
Donggangseowon Confucian Academy was established in 1695 by local Confucian scholars to venerate the civil official Son Jung-don (1463-1529). Son passed the state examination in 1482 and served numerous official posts, rising to the position of state councilor. During the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544), he was bestowed with the title of Pure and Untarnished Official (Cheongbaengni).
The academy was demolished in the late 19th century when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. The shrine, lecture hall, and gates were rebuilt in 1960, the dormitories and stele pavilion were rebuilt in 1986, and the pavilion named Takcheongnu was rebuilt in 1999. A veneration ritual is held here in the second and ninth lunar months.
