이 탑은 우리 시 출신 독립유공자의 애국정신을 기리고 이분들의 공헌과 희생을 항구적으로 존중하고 숭고한 정신을 후손들에게 길이 전하고자 건립되었습니다.
여기는 독립유공자의 애국 영혼이 모셔진 성스러운 곳입니다. 모두가 겸손하고 엄숙한 마음 자세로 먼저 가신 순국선열들의 애국 충절의 혼을 깊이 되새겨 주시기 바랍니다.

Memorial Monument for Persons of Distinguished Service to National Independence
This monument was built in 2009 to honor in perpetuity the patriotic service and sacrifice of 34 independence activists from the city of Gwangyang and to convey their noble spirit to future generations. These activists participated in the civilian-led anti-Japanese struggle and the 1919 March First Independence Movement in the years leading up to and during Japanese colonization (1910-1945), as well as the farming, labor, and student movements of the late 20th century.
Inscribed to the left and right of the monument are the activists’ names and a memorial text.
The figures atop the monument represent the triad of heaven, humankind, and earth. They symbolize the eager wish for independence and the call to participate in the independence movement.
영문 해설 내용
이 추모탑은 광양시 출신 독립유공자 34인의 애국정신과 공헌을 기리고 숭고한 정신을 후손들에게 길이 전하고자 2009년에 건립되었다. 이 독립유공자들은 한말 일제강점기에 항일 의병전쟁, 1919년 3·1독립운동, 농민운동, 노동운동, 학생운동 등에 참여했다.
탑의 왼쪽과 오른쪽에는 독립유공자의 명단과 추모의 글이 새겨져 있다.
추모탑의 인물상은 동양의 천·지·인을 상징하는 것으로, 하늘에 독립을 갈망하는 염원과 군중에게 독립 만세에 참가할 것을 호소하는 의미이다.
